Rav Moses Feinstein (Hebrew: משה פיינשטײַן‎‎ 'ר Moshe Faynshteyn; March 3, 1895 – March 23, 1986) was a Lithuanian Orthodox rabbi, scholar, and posek (an authoritative adjudicator of questions related to Jewish law), who was world-renowned for his expertise in Halakha, extreme gentleness and compassion, and was regarded by many as the de facto supreme halakhic authority for Orthodox Jewry of North America. In the Orthodox world, he is widely referred to simply as "Reb Moshe", and his halakhic rulings are often referenced in contemporary rabbinic literature.

Details

Tena'im, which translates as "conditions," is an Ashkenazic tradition of engagement (Ashkenazic means from Jewish people of Eastern European or Russian descent—like the two of us!). From the 12th to the 19th century, the tena'im ceremony announced that two families had come to an agreement on the marriage of their two children. At the ceremony, the tena'im document, a pre-wedding contract that sets out this agreement, was read out loud, signed and witnessed, and a piece of crockery was smashed to seal the deal.
